The 9^th Annual Diversified Agriculture Conference will be Wednesday-Friday, February 22-24, 2012 at the Davis Conference Center (1651 North 700 West) in Layton, Utah.

Early registration will be $40 per person until February 8, 2012. After that time, registration will be $60. The cost of the conference is low due to wonderful support by partners and a grant from USDA-Risk Management Agency.

The Diversified Agriculture Conference is designed to benefit agricultural producers who would like more tools to help manage their business. The conference focuses on more than just traditional agriculture, including recreation, tourism, direct marketing, farmers' markets, further processing, etc. For a closer look at the variety of topics covered, see the 2012 draft program or the 2011 participant proceedings book .

HIGHLIGHTS:

The conference will start with farm tours on Wednesday afternoon. Sessions will run all day Thursday and will end on Friday at 3:00 pm. The farm tours should be both educational and a lot of fun. For the details on what you will click the tours tab on the website.

There are a lot of great sessions planned. Here are a few highlights, but check out the full program attached.

· Urban Farming track with lots of great sessions planned. See what others are doing, talk about the issues and find out about resources to help you.

· High tunnel production – there has been a fairly active research program at USU on high tunnel production. Many sessions will feature the results of the research into various production methods.

· Agritourism – On Thursday afternoon there will be an agritourism track ending with a discussion at 5 pm on starting a Utah Agritourism Association. If you are a part of this industry or want to learn more these will be great sessions.

· Beginning farmer and passing it on to the next generation – sessions are planned to talk about programs available for producers, family business issues, and also highlight people that have started farming and how some farms expanded their enterprises to add a new partner.

· Management and other things – as always there will also be sessions to help you plan, market and manage your farm business better.

Small businesses that are owned by women and minorities that provide professional services, construction and supplies can apply for a free certification under the SBA 8(a), HUBZone and other specialized program certifications. Federal, State and local public agencies across the US seek out firms certified for federally funded projects with these certification set-asides.

BACKGROUND OF RECIPIENT:

Kathy Rabb and Scott Rabb, mother and son, founded CastleRock Coffee & Candy almost 10 years ago. Kathy was working in the Salt Lake area as a business banker and enjoyed the small business world. She and her husband, Tom, were attracted to the rural lifestyle of Wayne County, and wanted to make Torrey home.

With the help of the Wayne County Travel Council, they gathered enough research to determine who was visiting our area and what they were looking for. They started with a great cup of coffee. As they were operating, they listened to what their customers were asking for. Good chocolate was on the top of the list. So over six years ago, they started tempering chocolate and creating a few of their own pieces.

They ran out of space as their chocolate gained popularity and customer demand increased. In March of 2010, they applied for the Rural Fast Track Grant through the Governor’s Office Of Economic Development to help them purchase good quality equipment, they created Red Desert Candy Company and moved the candy operation to another location in Torrey.

CastleRock is their primary client, but Red Desert Candy also has several wholesale accounts and they sell their products on-line at reddesertcandy.com. Their highest activity season is the Christmas Holidays, so they operate year around which helps provide winter job opportunities.

A microenterprise business is a small business with five or fewer employees that requires less than $35,000 to start, and is too small to qualify for commercial banking services.

There are an estimated two million microentrepreneurs in the United States today, offering a variety of services and products from home-based day care and auto repair to specialty foods and scrap books.

Facts about Government Grants. SBA does NOT provide grants for starting and expanding a business.

Some business grants are available through state and local programs, nonprofit organizations and other groups. Facebook giving free ads to small businesses

Facebook will be awarding free advertising space on its platform to 200,000 small businesses in the U.S. as part of a new partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

According to the three groups, more than half of Facebook's 800 million active users have connected to a small business via the platform. Starting in January 2012, the social networking company will award up to $10 million in ad credits to 200,000 small businesses. This works out to $50 per business.

The company said further details on the ad giveaway are forthcoming. The initiative with the business groups also entails webinars and a series of events across the country to teach business owners about using Facebook for marketing.

The world's fastest parade (55 miles per hour) begins the festivities.
Pre-Parade Party. Since everyone enjoys getting together before the big parade, we're changing things up this year. The parade pre-party begins at Chillz on Highway 24 at 4:30PM-6:00PM. Food and beer will be available for purchase and everyone is encouraged to hang out at their outdoor patio.

Parade Lineup. Everyone should be in line for the parade by 5:30PM in front of Chillz. The parade will begin promptly at 6:00PM. This year's theme is "SUPERHEROES". We look forward to seeing your costumes and car/truck decorations.
First Feature Film. Activities begin at the Wayne Theatre at 6:30 P.M. with a short film focusing on the theme and a costume contest. The feature film "Batman: The Movie" follows. As always, wonderful door prizes will be given.
The Party. Around 9:00 P.M. Friday night after the first screening, the "Party of the Stars" will be held with food, drinks, and a band. This year, the venture has changed to The Rim Rock Patio east of Torrey. What hasn't changed is our favorite band, The Sister Wives! The party includes wonderful food and drink.

Captain America was originally scheduled to be released on the 50th anniversary of the Captain America comic in 1990. However it was only shown in a few theaters during the next couple years then seemed to disappear.
Riding a bizarre line between serious and silly, the storyline features an ordinary soldier who is turned in Captain America as part of a top secret military operation. Although the story begins during World War II, Captain America becomes frozen and doesn't thaw out until 1990. Although our superhero is confused by the Japanese cars, strange clothes, and VCRs, he is committed to saving the President of the United States from a goofy Italian villain known as Red Skull that dislikes the environment for some unknown reason.
From bad accents to awful special effects, this feature keeps audiences on the edge of their seats looking for the next bad line of dialog and the next appearance of a Christmas Story cast member. Entertainment Weekly called it "just all wrong"... what more do you need for a fun afternoon of entertainment?

Flash Gordon is a 1980 science fiction film based on a comic book hero. It's campy style and music by the rock band Queen have made it a classic. From the outlandish costumes and corny lines to the evil laughs and silly subplots, Flash Gordon is the perfect "ordinary man becomes superhero" story.
Emperor Ming the Merciless is planning to destroy the Earth. New York Jets football star Flash Gordon along with travel journalist Dale Arden are accidently launched into space along with scientist Dr. Hans Zarkov. Flash must rescue the women and save the universe. You don't want to miss the silly 21 bird salute or mysterious power ring conclusion.

Friday Events

The world's fastest parade (55 miles per hour) begins the festivities.
Pre-Parade Party. Since everyone enjoys getting together before the big parade, we're changing things up this year. The parade pre-party begins at Chillz on Highway 24 at 4:30PM-6:00PM. Food and beer will be available for purchase and everyone is encouraged to hang out at their outdoor patio.
Parade Lineup. Everyone should be in line for the parade by 5:30PM in front of Chillz. The parade will begin promptly at 6:00PM. This year's theme is "SUPERHEROES". We look forward to seeing your costumes and car/truck decorations.
First Feature Film. Activities begin at the Wayne Theatre at 6:30 P.M. with a short film focusing on the theme and a costume contest. The feature film "Batman: The Movie" follows. As always, wonderful door prizes will be given.
The Party. Around 9:00 P.M. Friday night after the first screening, the "Party of the Stars" will be held with food, drinks, and a band. This year, the venture has changed to The Rim Rock Patio east of Torrey. What hasn't changed is our favorite band, The Sister Wives! The party includes wonderful food and drink.

Saturday Morning Events

Swap Meet. Saturday morning at 9 A.M. starts off with our trademark Swap Meet at the Robber's Roost Bookstore in Torrey. Bring some stuff to swap and find some treasures.
Pioneer Days. The Pioneer History and Music program is held at the Teasdale Cultural Center for those interested in local and state history.

Mutton & Taters Dutch Oven Lunch. At noon, BIFF participants go to Teasdale (8 miles southwest of Torrey) for the Teasdale Volunteer Fire Department's Mutton, Chicken & Taters Dutch Oven fund raiser which begins at noon at the Teasdale Park Shelter House.

Third Feature Film. The grande finale begins at 6:30 P.M. with an introduction, trivia, and showing of our final feature film, "Flash Gordon". In addition, you'll enjoy our first annual Independent Film Awards viewings based on our superhero theme.
The Party. The BIFF "It's a Wrap Party" begins after the movie at 9:00PM with food, drinks, and a band. Be sure to stay for fabulous prizes like Sunglow Restaurant pies! The party will be held at Chillz in downtown Torrey again this year. The Main Street Revelators will provide entertainment. This three-piece electric blues band will play a wide variety of music.

Public Tours Available at Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry

Richfield, Utah— Education personnel from the Burpee Museum will be on site at the Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry to conduct guided tours for the public. Tours will run from June 6 through June 15. Guides will provide information related to various paleontological excavations and will answer questions concerning this important and valuable site. The Bureau of Land Management, Utah and the Burpee Museum are working together on this long-term research initiative and interpretive plans to provide for educational and recreational opportunities in coming years.

Museum personnel have scheduled public tours beginning daily on June 6-11 and June 13-15. No tours will be held on June 12. Tours will only be offered under favorable weather conditions– if inclement weather conditions occur, tours will be cancelled. Notification signs will be posted off of Highway 24 detailing whether the quarry tours are operating each day.

Tours will start on the hour, every hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will last approximately 45 minutes to an hour. Groups will be limited to a maximum of 25 people per tour on a first come, first served basis. All visitors are required to sign in at arrival.

Summer temperatures may reach the upper 90’s; visitors are expected to carry water and should arrive prepared for such conditions. There are no developed facilities located at the quarry site.

The Hanksville-Burpee Dinosaur Quarry is located approximately 10 miles northwest of Hanksville, Utah. The road into the site is not maintained for passenger cars, high clearance vehicles and four-wheel drive may be necessary during and/or after storm events.

This summer marks the fourth season that paleontologists from the Burpee Museum of Rockford, Illinois have conducted excavations at the site. The quarry has yielded at least four long-necked “sauropods,” two carnivorous dinosaurs and a possible herbivorous, stegosaurus. The Hanksville-Burpee site is approximately 145-150 million years old.

Located in a preserved river channel, the quarry contains the fossilized remains of multiple dinosaur skeletons, animal burrows and large petrified tree trunks.

This is part of an occasional feature where Utah hikers tell us about their favorite trails. This week’s contributor is Torrey Mayor Adus F. Dorsey II.

My favorite Wayne County hike is Lower Spring Canyon in Capitol Reef National Park. From the Chimney Rock parking area to the Fremont River and Highway 24 the hike is about 9 miles in length. The national parks brochure description lists it is “strenuous, “ but I took my Ma down there when she was like 65 and by about mile 6 I was lucky to get her to stop for lunch. If there was anyone showing signs of strenuous activity it was me.

Lower Spring Canyon starts at the Chimney Rock trail parking lot. Your backpack should have plenty of water, sun screen (depending on the time of year) and variety of healthy snacks or a lunch from one of the local delis, which are always delicious. For me, it is a full lunch. I like to find a nice shady spot somewhere on the way and enjoy the canyons solitude while I eat my pastrami sandwich. After that, take a short afternoon snooze. Living in Wayne County you get to do that because you can.

I also like to take a pair of water sandals for the river crossing at the end of the hike. Generally passers by on the highway are pretty good about giving you a lift back up the hill to the Chimney Rock parking lot even if you are sweaty and look like someone that has just crawled out of the canyon, which you just did, but if you are in a group it might be a good idea to park a car at the lower end of Spring Canyon so as to avoid having to walk the 7 miles on the highway back to your starting point.

I like to start at Chimney Rock because after the short cardiac workout up the switchbacks at the very beginning of the hike it is all down hill from there. Right off you will start seeing long, gnarly trunks of petrified wood. Local lore has it that some hardy Girls Scouts packed the solid rock trees up there in the early 1930s, but we all know that would be improbable and in reality it was cave men using dinosaurs as pack animals to get them up to the trail. Believe what you will.

About a mile down the canyon you start to encounter a short section of narrows with two 10 -to-15-foot dry falls. (Wild wet falls if you have dared venture in the canyon during threatening weather or a flash flood.) The two falls can be bypassed by following a hiker made path route on the north side of the canyon. Use caution in this area, or send someone you don’t like first to check it out.

The 9-mile Lower Spring Canyon hike offers beautiful scenery, as much time as you need for personal nature contemplation or more than enough time to learn more than you might care to learn about your friends or family. At the end of the hike you are faced with a river crossing with no bridge. On most summer days rolling up your trousers above your knees will get you across in good shape but it could be a problem if you need to hitch a ride you being soaking wet unless that ride is from a local cowboy that needs a good laugh and some friendly conversation.

Surely you will be walking in the footsteps of the ancients in Lower Spring Canyon. Granaries strategically placed on the cliff walls and geological formations like the famous Elf Slipper make Lower Spring Canyon my all-time favorite hike.

"It's nice to see a U.S. governor with a head on his shoulders," whispered one businessman at the event who said he was from Switzerland and was visiting Utah on a ski/business trip. Governor Herbert's leadership was also noted during the morning keynote address when Ray Torto, global chief economist for CB Richard Ellis, drew laughs from the audience by saying, "Your governor is smarter than my governor. Your governor went to China. My governor went to Europe."

Opportunities and Threats
The all-day summit featured nationally recognized experts and specialists in real estate, finance, entrepreneurship and strategic marketing with breakout sessions that covered the opportunities and threats to businesses across the state. Also during the event, Fred C. Adams, founder of the Utah Shakespearean Festival, was honored for his community service and contributions to economic development in Iron County and the state, while C.R. England, a Salt Lake City-based international trucking company, received the state's Economic Legacy Award.

Torto and Mike Lafitte, president, Americas, for CB Richard Ellis, shared the podium for the morning keynote address. The pair described Utah's commercial real estate landscape and said the state got hit hard with the recession but is coming out faster than the U.S. as a whole. Truly, Utah has weathered the economic storm better than most of the country and is thus poised to rebound quickly. "Utah is the gold standard--the team to beat," said Gov. Herbert. Over the past decade Utah has consistently been one of the top states for growth in business and has proven to have tremendous economic vitality. Much of that economic vitality can be attributed to fiscal responsibility, low taxes, low energy costs, a dynamic workforce and a business-friendly environment.

Proper Role of Government
Gov. Herbert's singular view that government should not inhibit business growth drew laughs when he said the Charmin bathroom tissue on display at the ribbon-cutting of Procter & Gamble Co.'s new manufacturing plant in Brigham City reminded him of the proper role of government: "You need enough to do the job, but it also has to be soft and unobtrusive."
The governor further explained that growing the economy is his number one focus, because that is the "linchpin for all the needs we have in our society. If we want to have more money for education, then grow the economy. If you want money for transportation, grow the economy; more money for health and human services, have a healthy economy." To grow the economy his administration is focused on what he called "four cornerstones of success." They are:

Strengthen and grow existing Utah businesses, both urban and rural.
Increase innovation, entrepreneurship and investment.
Increase national and international business.
Prioritize education to develop the workforce of the future.

Reform Efforts
Additionally, he said the state is trying to solve its problems before they become crises. Unlike other states, Utah has been aggressive in its pension and healthcare reform efforts. Illegal immigration is another difficult problem, but Utah is working to find solutions. Gov. Herbert described the immigration bills that came out of the recent legislative session as imperfect, "but at least we are working in the right direction."

Moreover, he said Utah is on the cutting edge, trying to find its own solutions to its own difficult problems. "We need to be more innovative and creative," he explained. As an example of such creativity, he said the state tried to streamline its Medicaid processes and become more efficient by going paperless, adding that such a move would save the state $6.3 million annually. And if the nation adopted a similar paperless effort the country would save approximately $1 billion per year. Unfortunately, Utah's application for a waiver from the federal government to go paperless in handling Medicaid was denied. Ironically, Gov. Herbert said the denial message was delivered by email.

Utah Solutions
Despite the setback, Gov. Herbert said the state will look for "Utah solutions to Utah problems. "We are seeing a rebirth of federalism across the nation and Utah will continue to lead in that arena, too," he said. "I am optimistic about the people of Utah and our future. We can and should be an example to the rest of the country about how to do it right."
Gov. Herbert also noted the need for the state to have a robust educational system. "It is the key to our future," he explained, adding that this is the first time in three years the legislature was able to fully fund education. "We are doing it all without raising taxes."

A well-designed logo is a critical element to your business for market identity. The logo is the signature of your business, and as such, it should be memorable as well as showcase what your company does.
Here are a few things to consider when creating an effective logo:

Keep it simple—Simplicity is the best way to communicate a message; the more crowded something is, the harder it is to remember.

Make it manageable—Your logo should be easily manageable in terms of size, form, font and colors, especially as you need to scale it to various print sizes like a business card or a billboard.

Create something unique—Your business needs to stand out from the competition and the plethora of other companies already in existence. Your logo is one of the best ways to accomplish this. It will also help you capture your target market with ease.

If you plan to include the name of your business in your logo, make sure they somehow integrate and balance one another. Also, keep your target market in mind as you develop your logo to create something that is appealing. If you don’t qualified to design your own logo, get quotes from graphic artists who can design it for you. This initial investment may be more cost effective and efficient than trying to create it yourself.
Your logo, if used correctly, will create and build consumer awareness for the products and services your business offers.

Branding is the term used today in reference to business logos and is similar to a first impression – what the consumers remembers. The most skillfully branded company names have their functions included in the name. The Beth Holbrook Company might sound good but what does it tell you about the business?
Remember that standing out in today’s competitive market has incalculable value down the road for your business.

SALT LAKE CITY — The clock is ticking for lawmakers in Washington to work out a deal preventing the first government shutdown in 15 years.
One group biting their nails: business owners and employees in destination-rich southern Utah.
"It would be devastating because all of the businesses in the area are either hotels, restaurants, guides and outfitters," said Jean Seiler, marketing director of Ruby's Inn, located at the entrance of Bryce Canyon National Park.

During the shutdowns in the mid-90s, more than 360 national parks closed their doors and gates.
A metal gate was installed at the Bryce entrance then, said Seiler. A locked gate isn't something he wants to see, or have to explain to the many foreign visitors who have flocked there in recent years.

"All those international visitors ... What do you say? I mean, how do you explain that?" Seiler said. "All I'm able to do is ask them if they have politicians in their country."
Seiler said Ruby's Inn was hit hard by the prior shutdown and would be again in a county where 97 percent of the land is controlled by government.

"Utah really relies on her national parks to attract tourists," said Keith Griffall, the CEO of Western Leisure, a company that runs scenic tours by motorcoach to national parks around the region.
Utah has five national parks, including Zion, Canyonlands and Arches, seven national monuments and two national recreation areas, including Lake Powell. Those destinations are the lifeblood of Utah's $6.2 billion tourism industry.

Officials with the National Park Service declined to comment on the possible shutdown.
A call Friday to the Department of Interior wasn't returned.
If shut down, tourists would likely go elsewhere. "If they're going to spend enough money for a week or two week trip, then they might just decide to either postpone or change it all together," said Griffall. "Go to the Bahamas, who knows?"

In 1996, protesters marched into Zion National Park to protest a lengthy budget crisis and closure of the National Park system. Some local business owners estimated during the shutdown they lost 75 percent of their business.

It appeared Republicans and Democrats in Washington may have worked out a short-term deal Friday, kicking the debate down the road to March 18.

Some Of Capitol Reef National Park should remain open if the government does shut down! There is no charge for an entrance fee to this Park. The Visitor Center, Camp Grounds, Scenic Drive & Some trails that need overnight permits may all close, but the overall park and trails should remain open. I will be highlighting the components of a business plan and why they are significant. This week I’ll be discussing the cover sheet, business purpose, table of contents, business description and marketing strategies. Let’s get started!

Cover sheet – Making a good first impression is essential to success, that’s why the cover sheet is a vital piece of your plan. Make sure to include your business name and logo on the cover sheet. Don’t be afraid to be creative, but at the same time, it needs to look professional. This is the first page anybody sees of your business plan, so it’s a great opportunity to showcase the individuality of your business.
Purpose – This is where you describe the mission and purpose of your business. Although all businesses want to turn a profit, most also have a specific reason for existing. What do you envision your company becoming? For example, maybe you want to serve the best Italian food in the city or to be the number one spa destination in town. The “purpose” is your ultimate goal for the business.
Table of contents – It’s helpful to incorporate a table of contents into the plan for reference and to make the document look more professional.
Business description and ownership – Here you describe what the business does and how it will deliver the product or service. Also, share the type of business structure and the names of the business owners. If your business has a production process, describe the process in detail in this part of the plan.
Marketing –Discuss all your marketing strategies and how you plan to reach your primary target market in this section. It will also be used as a foundation for developing your marketing message that you’ll use for all forms of media, from print to direct mail.

The 8^th Annual Diversified Agriculture Conference will be Monday-Wednesday (which is a change from past years’ Wednesday-Friday), February 21-23, 2011. It will be held at the Sevier County Fairgrounds (400 East 200 South) in Richfield, Utah.

There will be no pre-conference workshops. The conference starts at 1:00 pm on Feb. 21^st with the keynote by the Lt. Governor.

On Wednesday, the conference will go until 3:30 pm. The Wednesday schedule will be comprised of workshops including: business plans, assessing low water use crops, tools to analyze business expansion, and family issues with estate transfer.

Tracks include production opportunities, marketing, new and expanding businesses and regulatory and legal issues.

Lt. Governor Greg Bell will be a keynote speaker at the conference; and many other professionals and producers will be presenting on a variety of current agriculture topics.

Conference registration is $40 before February 14 and $60 after that date. The cost of registration includes everything from meals, breaks and workshops. Meals include Monday dinner and breakfast and lunch on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The cost of the conference is kept low due to wonderful support by partners and a grant from USDA-Risk Management Agency.

The Diversified Agriculture Conference is designed to benefit agricultural producers who would like more tools to help manage their business. The conference focuses on more than just traditional agriculture, including recreation, tourism, direct marketing, farmers' markets, further processing, etc. For a closer look at the variety of topics covered, see the 2011 draft program.

First Annual Rural Legislative Day Activities to Fill Capitol

Rural Utah composes most of the landmass of the State, but the total population in rural Utah is widely dispersed. This has posed a challenge for rural business and rural issues for many years, now with the assistance of the Rural Development Office in the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) the first annual Rural Legislative Day will be held during the 2011 legislative session. Governor Gary Herbert has been for many years an active part of the Governor’s Rural Partnership Board (GRPB) and it has regularly brought rural issues to the legislature for consideration.

“Rural Utah has many significant challenges with which the more urban parts of our State do not have to contend. This ‘Rural Day’ at the Legislature allows many small Utah business and local leaders from rural areas to visit with legislators and the public, and present those issues in a valuable and productive way,” said Governor Herbert.
This year, along with numerous displays in the Capitol Rotunda, on Friday February 4, 2011 a discussion of rural issues will be held in the Senate Building, Copper Room from 9am to 11 am.
Spencer Cox, the GRPB Co-chair will facilitate the discussion. “The Governor has said that our State economy is only as strong as the weakest part of the State,” said Mr. Cox. “While our urban communities are certainly the State’s economic power centers, our rural communities are the foundation for our elevated quality of life.”

17 of 29 counties in Utah are designated as rural. “Most people realize our rural communities are important but they don’t realize how critical business development is to our rural cities and towns,” said Senator Ralph Okerlund. “The Business Expansion and Retention program in GOED is critical to those communities.” The Senator also noted, “Having been a commissioner and mayor before I became a legislator, I understand that we are currently in a position to partner with rural businesses in a more significant way than we have in previous years. The Governor has been a small business owner and he understands the nature of the challenges we face.”
Beverly Evans, Director of the Rural Development office in GOED acknowledged, “the significant number of legislators, business and local community leaders who have all come together to help host this important rural legislative day and to discuss current rural development issues.”

Along with the Governor, the Lt. Governor, Senator, Ralph Okerlund, Senator Kevin Van Tassell and Representative Mel Brown will make short presentations during the events. There will also be time for the public and other interested people to have an open dialogue facilitated by Mr. Cox from the Governor’s Rural Partnership Board.

The U.S. Census Bureau today released 5-year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates for the first time, making available social, economic, housing and demographic statistics for every community in the nation. Up until now, small geographic areas had to rely on outdated 2000 Census figures for detailed information about the characteristics of their communities. Consisting of about 11.1 billion individual estimates and covering more than 670,000 distinct geographies, the 5-year ACS estimates give even the smallest communities more timely information on topics ranging from commute times to languages spoken at home to housing values.
